Israel expects Iran to strike 'as soon as this evening'

Israel is preparing for retaliation from Iran as early as this evening, our US partner network reports.

Sources have told NBC that UK officials have heard Israel believes a missile attack could come tonight.

An Israeli military spokesman says the potential missile attack is expected to be widespread, according to Reuters.

US officials expect this Iranian response to involve more firepower than the response in April, NBC reports.

Officials say it's expected to include a higher number of ballistic missiles than were used in April, and therefore the threat could be more significant.

Militia groups could also play a role here, including missile launches from the Houthis, officials say.

Israelis urged to 'stay close to protected space'

Israelis have been told to "stay next to a protected space" in alerts sent after US warnings that a missile attack by Iran is imminent.

The Home Front Command, which is responsible for civil protection, said people should "minimise moving around the area" and "avoid gatherings".

Iran 'expected to target Israeli military sites'

A senior White House official and defence department official have said Iran is expected to target military and government sites, not civilian, our US partner network NBC reports.

It comes after US officials warned in the past hour that they have indications Iran is getting ready to launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel imminently.

IDF posts first footage appearing to show Israeli troops in Lebanon

By Sam Doak, OSINT producer

The Israeli military has shared footage that seems to show its troops operating in Lebanon for the first time since it announced the onset of its ground offensive.

Sky News has geolocated the aerial footage to a house around 200 metres over the United Nations Blue Line separating Lebanon from Israel.

Features such as an orange roof and curved edge allow the building to be matched to publicly available satellite imagery.

While much of the on the ground footage is filmed inside and impossible to independently locate, a short section is filmed outside.

This can be matched to the aerial footage due to the presence of a small, curved tree.

While the video was first shared today, there is no independent evidence that establishes the time of filming.

Iranian attack on Israel could be 'at least as big as April'

A supposedly imminent missile attack on Israel by Iran could be as big or bigger than the one it carried out in April if it goes ahead, a US official has told Reuters.

The official said the assessment was based on initial indications and therefore was not certain.

Senior officials told NBC News that Iran was preparing a ballistic missile attack and that the US was "actively" supporting Israel in its defence preparations.

For context: Iran launched an unprecedented drone and missile barrage against Israel in April.

Tehran claimed it was retaliation for an attack on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus by Israel.

Israel said most of the drones were intercepted. It responded by carrying out "limited" strikes on Iran days later.

Hezbollah claims to launch missiles at airbase near Tel Aviv

Hezbollah says it has launched missiles at Sde Dov airbase on the outskirts of Tel Aviv in central Israel.

Sky News cannot independently verify the claim.

It comes as Israel's military says it launched a "precise strike" on Beirut this afternoon (see 15.14 post).

No missile attack from Iran detected yet - but we are ready, says IDF

Israel says it hasn't detected an "aerial threat" launched from Iran but its military is at "peak readiness" for any attack.

A short time ago, a senior White House official told our US partner network NBC news that Washington has indications that Iran is getting ready to launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel imminently (see 14.57 post).

Israeli army spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a statement that Israel had "dealt with this kind of threat in the past and we will deal with it now as well".

"I want to repeat this again: we still do not detect an aerial threat launched from Iran," he said.

Rear Adm Hagari said Israel's air defence systems were "fully equipped with air force planes currently patrolling the sky".

"We are at peak readiness in attack and defence. We are at a very high level of readiness together with our partners from the United States, our ally. We are following the developments in Iran together," he said.

Israeli military carries out 'precise strike' in Beirut

Israel's military says it has carried out a "precise strike" in Beirut.

Two security sources told the Reuters news agency that Israel carried out two attacks on the Lebanese capital this afternoon, striking the southern suburbs and Beirut's southern entrance.

A high-rise building was reportedly hit in the Jnah district, according to the sources.

Eyewitness: 'If they're going to die, I want to die with them'

By Alex Crawford, special correspondent in Lebanon

There are Lebanese army troops stationed around the country's Litani river after Israeli forces warned people not to cross the waterway heading south for their "personal safety".

The Israeli forces have since issued evacuation orders to 20 communities near the border and told them they must leave to an area north of the Awali river, which is beyond the city of Sidon and about 50km in a straight line from the southern border.

One Lebanese soldier told us on condition of anonymity that they were making trips further south to try to persuade people to leave and help with any evacuations.

We've just left a mass funeral service for 13 people, including women and at least two children, who were killed in the deadliest single Israeli airstrike in Lebanon for nearly a year.

About 45 people were killed when Israeli bombs hit two residential blocks in the village of Ain El Deleb.

"What have we done to deserve this," one woman called Noor said.

"It's so painful and I feel like I'm in a dream I can't wake up from. We thought Sidon was safe.

"We never thought it would be attacked. That's why we took in families who'd left their homes in the south. It's a war crime."

Ellen, a 23-year-old master's student, said she'd left her studies in France to join her family in Lebanon two weeks ago.

"If they're going to die, I want to die with them," she told us.

"There are no words to express what's happening here, and no one in the world cares. We are just a small country. Just a pinprick on the map. We just want peace."

As the sound of gunfire crackled in the distance from another three funerals, mourners hastily dispersed.

"People are very angry," one said. "Anything could happen."

The city of Tyre seems a lot calmer than in recent days when there was almost constant bombardment from Israeli jets in and around the city as well as infrequent rocket launches from Hezbollah positions.

Iran 'preparing imminent missile attack' on Israel, US warns

The US has indications that Iran is getting ready to launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel imminently, a senior White House official and defence department official have told our US partner network.

Preparations to defend Israel against the strike are being "actively" supported by the US, they told NBC News.

They also warned that a direct attack on Israel by Iran would carry severe consequences.
