It's More Fun With Friends
Gorilla Tag is a VR multiplayer game that, despite its colourful and adorable gorilla characters, sells itself as a psychological horror. There are a few different modes to choose between, from Casual where you just hang out with your gorilla buddies, playing a game of Tag or Infection where you're running from the infected player(s) and the match only ends when everyone is tagged.

The Oculus Quest makes VR more accessible than ever before - and what's better than free games?
There's also Manhunt and Paintball, but other than Casual Mode, you'll find yourself needing to run, jump, and generally be a parkour pro to dominate in this game. To help you get started, we've put together some beginner tips.
Updated May 24, 2024: We've updated this article for some further clarification on ghosts.
Keep Your Palms Sideways
One of the basics of Gorilla Tag is that you're using your arms to get around, but you don't want to be using the flat of your palm against the ground as then you're pushing up than forward.
Keep your palms sideways with your palms facing away from you, so that you're pushing away from where you are and towards where you want to be.
You Can Customise Your Gorilla With Cosmetics
You don't want to look like everyone else, and fortunately, there are loads of cosmetics in the game. You get 100 Shiny Rocks for free each day, which is the currency in Gorilla Tag. Cosmetics include hats, badges (that go on your chest, including things like ties), holdables for your arm or back (like a toy or umbrella), and face cosmetics.
You can only purchase cosmetics from the City Map, which you can get to by following the sign for the Store in Stump.
What Are Ghosts?
Ghosts are bots that you may run into that look, act, or sound a little strange. They never wear cosmetics, and often have features that shouldn't occur naturally in the game, so you know they're a ghost. For example, the one in the image above has unnaturally long arms.
There's a rumour that ghosts can ban players but this is not true.
Try And Get Above Other Players
When you're trying to tag other players, the best way to achieve this is to get high above them so they don't know where you are, and then jump down on them from above. If players see you coming, they will run and make it harder and more frustrating to hunt them down, so a surprise attack will mean you can tag more easily.
Don't Stay On The Ground
While it might seem easier to stay on ground level and run away from any would-be taggers or infected, you'll be leaving yourself open to attack more by staying there. Other players will be more likely to chase you down or target you from above, so run up ramps and climb trees to stay out of reach and harder to catch.
Hiding Is Just As Useful As Running
You don't always want to have to outrun your pursuers, so finding a nice hiding spot is just as viable as legging it away from lava monkeys.
You can hide in trees amongst the leaves so you're not seen and even change your gorilla colour so you blend in, you can climb to the very top of trees and back up out of sight, or there's even a tree house to hide in.
Keep an eye out for hiding spots and then try to survey your surroundings from there to see what others are getting up to.
Use Juking To Evade Other Players
Misdirection is your friend, and that's exactly what juking is — it's making your pursuers think you are going one way, then suddenly pivoting to change direction and escaping from them.
You can do this in a variety of ways, such as climbing and then bouncing off surfaces to change direction, or moving your hands to the side to quickly walk sideways like a crab, then changing direction and going back the other way. Another good way is to grab a pole and make it look like you'll swing out the other side, but then change back and swing back out the side you came from.
It's More Fun With Friends
Gorilla Tag, like most games, is more fun when you play with friends instead of random people. You can create private rooms via your computer, scroll up to 'Rooms', and then choose a code to share with friends to allow them to join. This ensures it's just people you know playing with you, instead of strangers.
